Spring in the Lakes Region

Spring in the Lakes Region

After a long and chilly winter, spring officially arrived in the Lakes Region on Sunday, March 20th. We are delighted to welcome the longer days, sunshine and all the excitement the upcoming and much anticipated season brings. Spring in the Lakes Region is truly a special time where the warmer weather breathes life into the blossoming and vibrant landscapes and the region seems to awaken.

Lake Winnipesaukee begins to thaw and come April, Ice-Out is traditionally declared on the Big Lake. Ice-Out is officially announced when the ice on the lake has cleared enough for the MS Mount Washington to travel to each of its ports along the lake. Ice-Out is also around the time that the prominent Common Loons return to their birth lakes after spending the winter season on the coast. Spring has many sounds, one of the most popular being the distinguished call of the loon. To learn more about this native species we recommend visiting The Loon Center located in our neighboring town of Moultonborough.

Spring is also the time to exchange the snowshoes for hiking boots and connect with nature. There are multiple great hiking trails located within the Lakes Region providing breathtaking views from the summits and trails. We have compiled a list of some of our favorite local hiking trails that can be found here.

The springtime is when many popular seasonal attractions open their doors back up and welcome visitors. Several of the museums located within the Lakes Region open in the month of May, eager to teach guests from near and far about their exhibits and their purpose. One of our favorite local landmarks is Castle in the Clouds, located in Moultonborough. This popular historic estate offers educational tours of the colossal home built in the early 1900s and provides multiple activities including miles of walking trails.

Other spring activities in the area include fishing, boating and other exciting watersports. At the Center Harbor Inn, we offer watercraft rentals to our guests including kayaks, paddle boards and pedal boats. This is the perfect opportunity to experience milder temperatures and the fresh spring breeze on the lake. Once back at the Inn, grab a picnic lunch with the delectable offerings of Gusto Italian Café, located just across the street, or enjoy dinner overlooking the glistening lake at Canoe Restaurant and Tavern. Once dusk hits, swing by Twin Barns Brewing Company for a tasty beverage in their antique barn or entertaining beer garden while enjoying live music from one of the many talented local musicians.
