Center Harbor Inn’s Fall Ahead 2023

The fall season in New England signifies the shift from the warmth of summer to the chill of winter, and it’s renowned for its breathtaking hues and scenic splendor. The fall foliage in New England is said to showcase some of the most radiant natural colors found in the United States, making it a sought-after destination for tourists from all over North America and beyond. Enthusiasts journey to regions such as Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and certain areas of Massachusetts to witness the autumnal spectacle, an activity fondly referred to as leaf peeping.  Hiking during Autumn has become popular due to the magnificent colors and scenery.

The combination of natural rugged landscape and rural, small-town villages have made several areas in New England iconic locations for fall color photography. The numerous barns, church buildings, farmhouses, covered bridges, and villages, combined with the vibrant seasonal colors make for iconic photographs.

Across most of northern New England by mid-September the days are still warm, but the nights have become cool.

This period marks the start of the transformation process in deciduous trees, where their leaves change into a variety of colors. In New England, a significant proportion of trees generate a pigment called Anthocyanin, resulting in the vibrant reds and purples that are typically observed during this season, a transformation that is especially noticeable in the region’s sugar maple trees. This gradual color-changing process initiates in northern Maine and the higher terrains of Vermont and New Hampshire around mid-September, progressively extending to the central New England regions of southern Vermont and New Hampshire.

Autumn in New Hampshire begins in mid-late September and runs through the end of October. The best time to see the leaves change color is around mid-to-late September and extends through mid-October. Fall colors are expected to peak around the week of October 15, and by the time October finishes, the foliage is pretty much gone. The best time to see the leaves change color is from north to south, and the best foliage towns and routes for stunning scenery can be found in the New Hampshire White Mountains and around the Big Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee. Center Harbor, New Hampshire is a charming place to experience fall in the state.
